From Photo to Final Painting 2- Notans and Composition
This is the second step in my zoom workshop series. Sunday, 9/29, 9 am- 4 pm PST.
In this live media-agnostic zoom class, we'll be exploring black-and-white ink notans and the multifaceted ways in which mastering them can help us in our painting process.
Notans are a powerful tool that can help you simplify your shapes and see how your composition is working (or not working!). Because they are about what you do before you start painting, notans are useful no matter what medium you use!
I'll introduce the idea of the Hourglass, as we "funnel down" our values to pure black and pure white, and turn our "objects into shapes." We'll work from photos, paintings, and master works and will practice applying simple, repeatable compositional guidelines to help you improve or create stronger photos.
This media agnostic class, in conjunction with FPTFP 1, is meant as a primer for the free October Notan Challenge. It's a great introduction to help you get the most out of the notan-making experience! :)
