Stephen berry, artist and writer
Picture books are really what brought me back to art as an adult. The girls were young, I was a part time stay at home dad, and we read many many books together. It’s a story that I’m sure has been told many times. I’ve also always loved comics and manga. That’s when I thought, “These things are fantastic. And I love sharing it with them. I could do this too.”
That was a little over a decade ago, when I transitioned a portion of writing time into picture books, and started taking art classes again. I love painting redwoods and beaches and hills- it’s very healing, very much in alignment with what my soul needs. But there’s also a simple joy with cartooning and telling a story with drawing. It’s the only kind of art-making that’s ever made me laugh out loud, smirk knowingly, or cry.
I’m developing a cadre of my own picture books manuscripts, working as an artist-illustrator. I’m a SCBWI member and a graduate of the Children’s Book Academy. I’m currently unagented, and looking for representation.
