Demo video- How do I apply a notan to my painting process?
I did the zoom demo on the 26th, and I wanted to share it here for those who weren’t able to make it to the live session.
My focus was not to make a notan. Instead, I used a notan that we already made back in October, in my Facebook group. Instead, my goal was create an example of applying a notan. There are lots of reasons to make a notan- it can help you assess value contrast, it can help you organize shapes and composition, see leading lines, work on balance, busy versus restful areas, etc. But that’s all very early in the game. What do I after I’ve done it? How does it help me paint?
Notans can get applied in a number of ways. You should see some of all of these in the demo-
1) Sequencing- It helps me see the sequence of building the image. Whites come first, then dry. Darks come second, then dry. Then highlights or darkest darks. The notans shows you the order you can approach things, so that it doesn’t feel so haphazard. It can help you develop a plan.
2) Painting wet into wet- a notan bonds shapes together and simplifies them. It can really help you see how to bond wet into wet shapes together, by using the notan as a template.
